Emptying your in-tray is not a problem. You have a couple of bits of gossip, maybe some work stuff, but you never get bombarded with the fun stuff and heart-to-hearts that others seem to get.
Sitting around waiting for good emails is as soul-destroying as watching the letterbox on Valentine's Day. You need to realise that email is a two-way thing: start sending emails and you'll receive them. And when you do get a nice message, reply to it! If someone sends you a joke, reply with a laugh or a groan. And if someone emails you a hug, hug them back.
